One thought for all sentient beings, one thought for Buddha.
I once read a story:
A tour bus entered a mountainous area and, as it rounded a bend, a couple on board were captivated by the beautiful scenery.
They asked the driver to stop.
After they got off, the bus continued on its way.
Just as the couple paused to admire the mountain view, they heard a deafening roar ahead.
The bus had been struck by a landslide, tumbling down into a deep ravine.
It was later learned that none of the passengers survived
. After the initial shock subsided, the couple remarked with deep emotion
: Normally, most people would say, "Luckily, we weren't on the bus!"
But this couple said, "If we hadn't gotten off halfway, the bus could have passed before the landslide, and perhaps the people on board wouldn't have suffered this tragedy."
This statement is a test of human nature; the distinction between good and evil, beauty and ugliness, high and low, often lies in a single thought.
